Investment Rationale
Adolescents and young women—particularly those with disabilities—face systemic barriers to accessing accurate information, quality health services, and bodily autonomy. Exclusion from sexuality education, inaccessible health systems, stigma, and heightened exposure to violence and coercion leave many girls unable to make informed decisions about their bodies and futures. For girls and young women with disabilities, these risks are intensified by misinformation, communication barriers, and discriminatory attitudes within communities and health services.
Investing in disability-inclusive SRHR is critical to safeguarding health, dignity, and human rights. When girls and young women are equipped with knowledge, supported by accessible services, and empowered to exercise choice, outcomes improve across education, economic participation, and maternal and child health.
AGO’s Approach
AGO delivers inclusive, rights-based SRHR programming that centers the needs, voices, and agency of adolescents and young women, including those with disabilities.
Disability-Inclusive Comprehensive Sexuality Education
AGO provides age-appropriate, culturally responsive Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) that explicitly includes girls and young women with disabilities. Content addresses puberty, consent, relationships, contraception, gender equality, and protection from violence, while being adapted to diverse learning needs and communication styles.
Accessible SRHR Information and Materials
We develop and disseminate SRHR materials in accessible formats, including sign language interpretation, braille, audio, pictorial guides, and easy-read versions. This ensures that critical health information is understandable and usable for all learners, regardless of disability.
Youth-Friendly and Disability-Responsive Health Referrals
AGO partners with health facilities and service providers to strengthen youth-friendly, confidential, and disability-responsive SRHR services. We support referral pathways that reduce physical, communication, and attitudinal barriers, enabling young people to safely access contraception, maternal health services, HIV testing, and gender-based violence response.
Menstrual and Maternal Health Support
We integrate menstrual health education, access to menstrual products, and support for safe, dignified menstrual management. For pregnant adolescents and young mothers, AGO facilitates access to inclusive antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care, with particular attention to the needs of women with disabilities.
